ABILENE - Director of Tennis John Walker continues to bolster his men's 2020-21 roster with international talent following Friday's signing of Spain's Jose Maria Rastrojo. The addition of Rastrojo puts the number of newcomers at six entering the Fall 2020 term, as he joins fellow Spaniard Matias Montanes Tutzo in addition to Mihaly Deli of Hungary, Abilene's Ryan Flanagan, Mexico's Oswaldo Cano and Louisiana native Andrew Otzenberger.
Rastrojo has a No. 90 U18 Spanish ranking and has eight victories over players with higher Spanish and ITF rankings. He also won four major tournaments in 2019, including three in his hometown of Sevilla. Rastrojo also registered several runner-up showings and four semifinal appearances throughout last year.
"Like all our earlier signees, Jose is going to come here and hit the ground running," said Walker, whose team will play host to Tyler Junior College and Trinity University Saturday at the Teague Events Center. "He's a proven winner, competes year round against tough competition and will keep the program at the top of the Southland Conference. I look forward to having him here in Abilene with the rest of the squad."
Rastrojo plans to major in business administration at ACU. He will graduate from I.E.S. Los Alamos this spring.
