Adams leads way with double-double vs. UMHB

ABILENE — The ACU women's basketball team moved to 5-0 for just the second time since moving to NCAA Division I after a 95-49 victory over the Crusaders of Mary Hardin-Baylor. Senior Alyssa Adams was the catalyst Thursday night at the Teague Center, registering her fourth career double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds. The story was in the paint; ACU dominated inside, holding a 52-18 edge in the paint. The ‘Cats didn’t need their typical outside shots to shine (just seven three-pointers), but found other ways to get it done. Four Wildcats scored in double figures as ACU hits the 90-point threshold for the fourth time on the young season.

Key Plays

  • Adams scored four of the first eight points and was the bookends of a Makayla Mabry three-pointer that gave ACU the early 8-0 lead.
  • Adams and Kamryn Mraz scored back-to-back buckets at the rim to push the lead to 15-2 at the 3:06 mark of the first quarter.
  • After getting outscored 9-5 to end the first, Madi Miller got the scoring going in the second with a three-pointer, and the lead was right back to 10.
  • Alice Stevenson knocked down a triple on an assist from Anna McLeod at the 4:28 mark of the second to push the lead to 16, 33-17.
  • ACU closed the half with a 17-6 run and blew the game open at halftime, leading 47-21.
  • McLeod got hot in the second half, scoring four consecutive points on fast breaks at the six-minute mark. The redshirt senior ended up hitting a pair of three-pointers in the game as well.
  • Taylor Morgan was active at the rim in her 31 minutes, and hit free throws  to close the third quarter with ACU leading 74-41.
  • Adams hit a pair of free throws early in the fourth, and exited with a double-double to her name.

Turning Point

Right away. ACU scored the first eight points of the game and 15 of the first 17 of the game and it was clear the Wildcats would be in control from start to finish. UMHB played hard and made some runs, but ACU never led by less than nine from that point forward.

Stat Pack

  • Adams led the way with 21 points and 12 rebounds, the fourth double-double of her career and the first since Feb. 1, 2020 against UIW at home (11 pts, 10 reb).
  • It was also a season-high in both categories for Adams, with the 21 points just one away from matching her career high.
  • The lead was extraordinary in points in the paint, 52-18. ACU also led the way, 22-9, in fast break points.
  • All 13 Wildcats played in the game, with 12 scoring.
  • McLeod tallied 18 points and three assists and hit four of five at the foul line.
  • Miller and Morgan scored 10 apiece; the latter matching an early career-high for Morgan in 31 minutes.
  • Mabry got her first start of the season after coming off the bench the last handful of games; Mabry hit an early three for ACU.
  • Katie Horyna added nine points, a career-best for the freshman, and hit a pair of triples to go along with two assists.
  • Sarah Griswold scored eight points and nabbed six boards as well off the bench.
  • ACU did not record double-digit three-pointers made for the first time this season.
We did a good job being consistent and aggressive going after rebounds tonight. We weren't hitting three-pointers, but we post-fed and got layups. It was good to see us score in different ways. We made our free throws too. That was good for us to find different ways to do it.
Julie Goodenough, Head Women's Basketball Coach
My teammates did a great job tonight. They got me the ball when I was open. We worked well together. When I was getting doubled, we found a way to get it to others too. I was a little worried about shooting free throws tonight. I wasn't making both in warmups, but Coach has a lot of confidence in us. It was nice to hit all those tonight."
