ABILENE - With five seniors on track to graduate, Director of Tennis John Walker this month added three recruits to the Wildcats' 2020-21 roster: Mihaly Deli of Hungary, Matias Montanes Tutzo of Spain, and Abilene's Ryan Flanagan. Earlier in the winter, Walker received commitments from Mexico's Oswaldo Cano and Louisiana native Andrew Otzenberger.
Seniors Jonathan Sheehy, Jackson Fine and Niko Moceanu currently occupy three of this spring's starting spots, giving the newcomers ample opportunities to compete for a lineup vacancy against the projected six returners, including two-year starters Dimitrios Azoidis and Riley Tran and first-year competitor Savan Chhabra.
Geographically, the 2020-21 roster is expected to have six Texans on the roster, plus one Louisianian (Otzenberger), and international players from Cyprus (Azoidis), Hungary (Deli), Mexico (Cano) and Spain (Tutzo).
"These are great kids who fit our culture like a glove, " said Walker. "Their level as freshman is definitely in the range of some of our current upper classman and will make an immediate impact next year. Juan (Nunez) and I can't wait to work with this incoming class of recruits. It'll truly be a blessing to welcome them all here to Abilene."
The Wildcats are off to a 1-3 start this spring with losses against the likes of Tennessee, Oklahoma and Texas Tech. They return to their indoor courts Friday, Jan. 31 for a 9 a.m. / 6 p.m. doubleheader vs. Prairie View A&M and Oral Roberts.
