FRISCO, Texas - The 2019 Southland Conference All-Academic men's golf teams were announced Monday, and ACU's
Bryce Dooley was named to the second team. Dooley claims the honor less than a month after being named third team all-league. Sam Houston State's William Holcomb is the 2018-19 Men's Golf Student-Athlete of the Year. All yearly awards are presented by Ready Nutrition.
Dooley finished the season with a 74.3 scoring average over 28 rounds, playing in 10 of the Wildcats' 11 tournaments in 2018-19. His best finish was tied for 8th at The Big Texan when he became the only Wildcat all season to shoot below par in all three rounds as he carded scores of 71-67-70 to finish at 8-under-par 208.
Dooley — who finished tied for 18th at the Southland championship tournament at 13-over-par 229 — had six under-par rounds on the season (combined 15-under-par in those rounds) and five more even-par rounds. His best score on the season with a 5-under-par 67 in the second round of The Big Texan on March 25.
The All-Academic teams are voted on by a head coach, sports information director and academic/compliance staff member from each Southland Conference institution. Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA, have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's competition to qualify for All-Academic selection. Nominees who were also named to the All-Conference First Team or CoSIDA Academic All-District team are automatically named Southland All-Academic.
The Southland Conference awards committee, which consists of one administrator from each of the 13 member schools, votes for the student-athlete of the year. The Southland student-athlete of the year award is presented to one student-athlete who achieves excellence in both academics and athletics. All nominees must have earned at least a 3.2 GPA on a 4.0 scale and demonstrated athletics achievement for at least two years at the nominating institution.
