Jonathan Sheehy wins final Southland POTW award of 2019

FRISCO, Texas – Abilene Christian's Jonathan Sheehy Tuesday was voted Southland Conference Tennis Player of the Week for the third time in 2019. Southland Conference Players of the Week are presented by MidSouth Bank.

Wildcat tennis players this season have won 50 percent of the conference's weekly awards. The men's team has received nine of 13 possible laurels since the start of the season on Jan. 23 (69. 2 percent), while the women's team has claimed four citations (30.8 percent).

Sheehy secured the match-clinching point at No. 2 singles against Incarnate Word's Gabriel Evans Friday, wrapping up the 2019 Southland Conference regular-season title for the 5-0 Wildcats. He turned around the following day and picked up a straight-set singles win over UTSA's Joao Ceolin in a 4-3 team victory to extend his solo winning streak to three matches.

Playing with Nikolas Moceanu in doubles, Sheehy came out on top for the eighth time in the past nine matches with a 6-4 win against UIW's Dennis Boisseau and Oliver Valentinsson.

Abilene Christian (20-4, 5-0 SLC) concludes regular-season play against Midwestern State at 5 p.m. CT next Tuesday (April 23) and awaits the announcement of its first-round opponent in the 2019 Southland Conference Tournament, which begins Thursday, April 25, in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school's sports information director. Voting for one's own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on at least 25 percent of ballots.
