ABILENE – Abilene Christian women's tennis came back to campus a few days before the end of Spring Break and handed the Incarnate Word Cardinals a 6-1 defeat Saturday on the Eager Tennis Center outdoor courts.
The Wildcats have won their last four matches all against Southland Conference opposition in getting off to a 4-0 start, while lifting their overall season record to 8-7. The team also has defeated Incarnate Word six straight years since both schools joined the league in 2014 with all the scores at either 6-1 or 7-0. The last time UIW recorded two points vs. the Wildcats was all the way back in March of 2008 when both teams competed within the DII Lone Star Conference. The Cardinals lost that match, 7-2.
ACU today had little issue jumping out to a 1-0 lead as its No. 2 and 3 doubles teams of
Allison Stewart and
Sarah Adams, and
Ileana Mocciola and Autumn Bellow each won 6-1. Bellow and Mocciola have won their last three matches together and lead the Wildcats with 11 doubles victories.
The Wildcats went up 2-0 as UIW had no player to compete against Mocciola at the No. 6 line, and soon clinched the match with both senior
Jordan Henry and Stewart winning at straight sets at the fourth and fifth positions. Henry, who leads her side with 10 singles wins, beat Sara Djurdjevic, 6-3, 6-1, and Stewart, who has won four straight matches, beat Alejandra Tamayo, 6-2, 6-0.
The top three singles matches all were decided in a third-set supertiebreaker. Sophomore
Nini Memishishi and Adams were triumphant at the No. 1 and 2 lines, but Bellow was edged at No. 3 by Brandelyn Fulgenzi, 6-3, 3-6, 11-9.
ACU returns to action Sunday, March 24 with a 4:30 p.m. match at SMU.
