Jon Sheehy 4-0 in singles during Oklahoma trip

ABILENE - Abilene Christian men's tennis won three of four duals this past weekend in Oklahoma in improving to 5-3 on the season. The Wildcats won their first three duals over Oklahoma Baptist (6-1), Oral Roberts (7-0) and Omaha (4-1) before falling 6-1 Sunday night at No. 25 Tulsa.

The only Wildcat to score at least one team point in all four contests was junior Jonathan Sheehy, who was a perfect 4-0 in singles. The Arlington native completed his weekend with a hard-fought 1-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) triumph at No. 2 over Tulsa's Joshua Goodger, and earlier he defeated ORU's Andre Russo, 6-3, 6-3, Omaha's Razvan Grigorescu, 6-4, 6-4, and OBU's Kevin Andrusch, 6-0, 4-6, 10-3.

His win vs. Andrusch – who's coached by former Wildcat Jason Proctor – was played at the No. 1 position and sparked his current four-match winning streak that evened his season record at 4-4.

Sheehy additionally went 2-2 in doubles, earning wins alongside Oklahoma native Jackson Fine (vs. Omaha) and older brother, Josh Sheehy (vs. Oral Roberts).  

The Wildcats posted a combined doubles record of 6-5 (.545) this weekend but were an incredible 16-6 (.727) in singles with six of seven players finishing with above .500 records. Freshman Dimitris Azoides won three of four matches, while Joaquin Delgado, Nikolas Moceanu, Josh Sheehy and Riley Tran each went 2-1.

Josh Sheehy improved to 4-3 on the spring at No. 1 singles thanks to wins over Omaha's Abdoul Ouattara, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, and ORU's Kenneth Boykin, 6-2, 6-4. He had his winning streak snapped against 55th-ranked Majed Kilani of Tulsa, 6-3, 6-3.

The Wildcats return to action Saturday with a home doubleheader vs. Trinity (9 a.m.) and Tyler (7 p.m.).
