ABILENE – Abilene Christian men's tennis capped its 2018 fall season this past weekend at the Grand Canyon Invitational in Phoenix by producing a combined singles and doubles record of 25-13 (.658). Junior
Jonathan Sheehy and freshman
Michael Benavides each was flawless, as both went 6-0 with three singles and three doubles triumphs.
Sheehy was the lone Wildcat to score a win against the host Antelopes during Saturday's singles session, defeating Mathieu Rajaonah, 6-1, 6-2. On Friday he beat Arizona Christian's Enzo Douillac in three sets, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, and Sunday he beat Northern Arizona's Christopher Steele, 6-1, 7-5.
Sheehy was paired with
Cole Lawson in doubles and together they beat tandems from GCU, NAU and Arizona Christian by respective scores of 7-6 (7), 6-3, and 6-3 as the Wildcats posted an overall doubles record of 9-3.
Benavides and Tran won their matches against GCU and Mesa by scores of 6-3 and 6-2, and then defeated their teammates
Joaquin Delgado and
Akinori Wada, 7-6 (3), while the Wildcat combination of
Josh Sheehy and
Nikolas Moceanu went 2-1 with their victories coming against NAU and Arizona Christian.
ACU collected nine wins vs. Mesa this weekend, went 5-0 vs. Arizona Christian and 7-2 vs. Northern Arizona. GCU, however, bested the Wildcats in 10 of 14 matches. Benavides recorded ACU's first win over the Lopes this weekend, defeating GCU's Nicolau Macedo, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 during Friday's singles session.
Right behind Benavides and
Jonathan Sheehy with 2-1 singles records were Tran, Lawson,
Josh Sheehy and
Sebastian Langdon. Wada and
Jackson Fine each won one of their three singles matches.
