ABILENE – The ACU soccer team kicks off its regular season with two matches this weekend. The Wildcats will face off against UTSA Friday at 7 p.m. and battle UTEP Sunday at 1 p.m.
"We're 1-1 against UTSA in the last two years and 0-2-2 against UTEP the last four years," head coach
Casey Wilson said. "These are games that are important for us to get momentum going. Being on the road is tough, but we are excited and energetic to get the season started."
Against the Roadrunners: The Wildcats travel to San Antonio Friday to take on the Roadrunners. UTSA beat ACU 4-1 last season at Elmer Gray Stadium.
Shay Johnson scored the Wildcats lone goal by heading down a corner kick from
Chloe Fifer.
Both ACU and UTSA each have one win in the all-time series record (1-1-0). ACU won 5-3, in 2015 as senior
Megan Baer and junior
Sophie Standifer each put one in the back of the net.
Against the Miners: ACU continues action on Sunday in El Paso at University Field against the Miners. The Wildcats and UTEP battled it out in double overtime, resulting in a 0-0 tie in 2016. ACU finished the game with an 11-2 corner kick advantage, and outshot UTEP 23-14, (9-3 shots on goal). Junior
Dylan Owens and sophomore
Samantha Vestal each had three shots for the Wildcats.
UTEP holds the all-time series record 0-2-2 over ACU. Three out of four previous meetings have gone into overtime, two of which resulted in double overtime ties.
