ABILENE - A limited number of seats are still available for the Abilene Christian women's basketball banquet set for this Sunday, April 9 at the Williams Performing Arts Center. All fans are invited to join the team in a celebration of the Wildcats' 2016-17 Southland Conference Championship season.
The awards banquet will run from 5 to 7 p.m.
Individual tickets can be purchased for $25 or a table for eight can be sponsored for $400.
For seniors Lizzy and
Suzzy Dimba,
Alexis Mason and
Sydney Shelstead, this event will be one of their last together as Wildcat student-athletes. And after adding up all their career totals, it's simple to see why this class is among the most celebrated to wear a Wildcat jersey.
First there are the two Southland Conference Championships and adjoining trips to the WNIT, the foundation of which was 84 victories composed of 5,740 points, 537 3-pointers, 3,054 rebounds, 899 assists, 335 blocks and 728 steals. This class also has collected seven all-conference citations, four spots on the Southland Conference All-Defensive Team, two CoSIDA Academic All-District certificates, four conference all-academic plaudits, and 11 Southland Conference Player of the Week awards.
But 2016-17 wasn't just about the seniors. Freshman
Breanna Wright won the starting job at point guard and ranked among the Southland Conference leaders in assists, assist / turnover ratio and minutes played. Four times this season she played 40 minutes, including the team's Opening Night game at No. 24 Missouri in the first round of the Preseason WNIT.
Sophomore
Sara Williamson started the first nine games in place of an injured
Alexis Mason and helped the Wildcats win their WNIT consolation game vs. UTRGV with 16 points. She also stole a rebound at Northwestern State that led to a go-ahead 3-pointer by Wright.
Freshman
Dominique Golightly was one of the most accurate 3-point shooters in the conference after hitting six treys on nine attempts in back-to-back wins vs. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Sam Houston State. Two games later freshman
Pamela Herrera made all three of her shots off the bench in a 22-point home win vs. the Lady Demons that kick started a season-best eight-game winning streak.
Early in the year it was junior
Sierra Allen who helped boost the Wildcats' scoring efforts as she averaged 8.9 points per game during non-conference play. She totaled 12 points in back-to-back games vs. Howard Payne and Omaha, went 6-for-10 at No. 25 Texas A&M, and later scored a season high 15 points in just 19 minutes vs. Murray State.
ACU's tallest players
Lexi Kirgan and
Taudenciah Oluoch additionally contributed to the Wildcats' 23-win season. Kirgan knocked down her first two free throws of the season in ACU's one-point win at Northwestern State, while Oluoch recorded one her best games in the season finale at Houston Baptist, scoring six points and pulling down three rebounds in just four minutes of action as the Wildcats walked out of Sharp Gymnasium with the Southland Conference trophy.
ACU is expected to return all the aforementioned players with the exception of the seniors, and on their way up from the high school ranks are Alyssa Adams, Kayla Galindo, Josie Larson and Laura Rowe.
