ABILENE – ACU director of athletics Lee De Leon, Peak Sports president Ryan Holloway and Cumulus Media vice president Bourdon Wooten announced Monday that they have agreed to on a three-year contract that 98.1 FM The Ticket will be the flagship radio station for ACU Athletics. The contract with the media entity is for three years at twice the annual value of the previous agreement.
The new deal, which begins with the 2016-17 athletics year, will carry through the 2018-19 season and will include more than 425 radio broadcasts of ACU athletics events during the life of the contract, including at least 140 this season. Every football, men's and women's basketball games will be broadcast Cumulus, as well as every home baseball game and selected road games. Most broadcasts will be carried on our flagship station, 98.1 FM The Ticket, while some games will be carried on other Cumulus family stations.
The ACU Coaches' Show will also go back to airing live on 98.1 FM on Monday nights from 6-7 p.m., and through a deal put in place by Peak Sports Management, it will originate from the new Betty Rose's Little Brisket (2588 East Lake Road). The shows will begin Monday, Aug. 29, and run through the end of the athletics year. The public is invited to attend the show and be part of the live audience.
"We have been extremely pleased with Cumulus and the partnership we've enjoyed over the last three years, and we're excited to continue the relationship," De Leon said. "What we've done with this contract, however, is raise the bar on what we're offering our fans. We're providing more programming in terms of games and coaches' shows and consistency in their location on the dial. Each broadcast will give us with the opportunity to tell our story and connect with our great fans."
The first athletics event that will be broadcast will be Saturday's football season-opener at Air Force. That game is set for a 1 p.m. (central time) kickoff with the pre-game show set for a 12:30 p.m. start. Grant Boone returns for his ninth season behind the microphone as the "Voice of the Wildcats."
"The partnership between ACU and Cumulus Media is a game-changer for ACU Athletics and the Wildcat fan base," said Ryan Holloway, president of Peak Sports Management, ACU's official sports management company. "By establishing a more valuable partnership with the flagship station, it is another clear statement that ACU is doing big things in the Southland Conference and at the NCAA Division I level."
By signing the contract with Cumulus and agreeing to be on 98.1 FM, Wildcat athletics will be on the same station where local fans can find the Dallas Cowboys, among other sports broadcasts.
"Cumulus is extremely pleased and excited to be the flagship station for ACU athletics," said Bourdon Wooten, vice president / market manager at Cumulus in Abilene. "We've enjoyed a great partnership over the last three years, and we look forward to continuing that and adding even more programming over the next three years."
