ABILENE - Abilene Christian soccer kicks off its 2016 season this weekend with a pair of non-conference regional matches against Conference USA schools UTSA and UTEP. Match times are Friday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Wildcats face the Roadrunners for a second-consecutive season and their 5-3 victory last August in Austin was ACU's first of the season. It also was one of 15 defeats for UTSA, which finished last in C-USA.
Goals from
Natalie Throneberry,
Sophie Standifer and
Lindsey Jones gave ACU and early 3-1 lead but the Roadrunners rallied to tie the score in the 64th minute. The deadlock did not last long as
Kate Seay scored the go-ahead goal 38 seconds later, and
Megan Baer delivered an insurance strike in the 71st minute.
The Wildcats and Miners extend their series to a fourth-consecutive year Sunday. ACU tied UTEP at 1-1 during its first year of D1 competition, but lost 2-1 in overtime at Shotwell Stadium in 2014, and 1-0 last fall in El Paso. The Miners went 11-7-2 overall last season and finished 4-4-2 vs. their league.
ACU is coming off a 2-1 exhibition win Tuesday vs. Midwestern State. The Wildcats received goals from Seay and freshmen
Brooke Lenz as part of dominating performance, which included a 22-4 shot advantage.
