FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The ACU men's golf team finished just outside of the top 10 Tuesday at the Ram Masters Invitational after shooting a final-round 295 to finish tied for 11th with Illinois State.
The Wildcats – who opened play Monday with rounds of 292 and 309 – finished tied with the Redbirds at 896, just two strokes behind Air Force, which finished at 894 over the 54-hole tournament, which was played at the par-70, 7,215-yard layout of the Fort Collins Country Club.
The hosts from Colorado State won the team championship, posting three of the four lowest single-round scores of the tournament as the Rams shot 277-283-279 on their home course to post a score of 1-under-par 839. Kansas was second at 9-over-par 849, followed by Fresno State in third at 22-over-par 862, Wichita State in fourth at 33-over-par 873, and Wyoming at 36-over-par 876.
ACU's top finisher was Dillon Vaughn, who finished 11th in the individual standings at 5-over-par 215 after firing rounds of 70-73-72 at the par-70 course. Freshman Garrett Glanton finished tied for 29th at 10-over-par 220 with rounds of 70-78-72.
"I'm very pleased with the performances of Dillon Vaughn and Garrett Glanton this week," ACU head coach Tom Shaw said. "It was encouraging to see them excel on a championship course where you have all facets of your game tested. The course conditions were some of the most difficult we will face this year, so it provided a terrific opportunity for the team to learn and discover areas where they need to improve."
After playing their first two tournaments in Colorado (Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational in Colorado Springs and the Ram Masters Invitational), the Wildcats will finish out the fall schedule with two tournaments in the south. ACU will be back in action Oct. 12-13 at the Bayou City Collegiate Championship in Houston, followed by a trip to College Grove, Tenn., two weeks later (Oct. 25-27) for The Grove Intercollegiate.
"Our travels to Colorado the past two weeks (Air Force and Colorado State) have provided us valuable experiences that we'll use to become a better team for the remainder of the year," Shaw said. "We could easily stay in our comfort zone and play regional courses nearby that suit our games better, but that deprives our team of growth opportunities and chances to experience different environments. We need to be a team that has a game capable of traveling coast to coast and performing well in any venue."
