Box Score DENVER, Colo. – The ACU Wildcats played close again Friday evening, but once again weren't able to pull out a win as they dropped a 3-1 decision to Montana in the University of Denver Invitational volleyball tournament at Hamilton Gymnasium.
ACU dropped a 3-1 decision to the Grizzlies by the scores of 25-19, 27-25, 22-25, 25-22, to fall to 0-11 on the season. The Wildcats will be back in action Saturday with a day/night doubleheader against Illinois-Chicago (11 a.m. central time) and Denver (8:30 p.m. central time).
After dropping the second set by six points, the Wildcats were in position to tie the match at one set apiece when they grabbed a 24-23 lead on a kill by Jennie Loerch. But Hannah Sackett – who led the Grizz with 18 kills – put a ball away to knot the set again at 24-24. Capri Richardson then scored for Montana to give the Grizzlies a 25-24 lead and set point.
But Sackett had an attack error to knot the match again at 25-25. But Richardson put a ball down for Montana to give her team a 26-25 lead, and then the Grizzlies won it on an attack error by ACU setter
Sarah Siemens, taking the second set 27-25 to go up 2-0.
The third set went the Wildcats' way, although it was tied 20-20 after an attack error by Loerch. But
Lauren Walker came up with back-to-back kills to give ACU a 22-20 lead. After a kill by Sackett, Walker came back with another kill to give ACU a 23-21 lead. After each team scored, the Wildcats got the win in the third set on an attack error by Richardson.
The Grizzlies, however, dominated the fourth set, holding as much as a 23-16 lead before settling for a 25-22 victory in the final set and taking a 3-1 win in the match.
The Wildcats hit .190 as a team and were led by Walker (14 kills and .545 hitting percentage) and Loerch (12 kills). Siemens finished with 38 assists and a team-best 14 digs. The Wildcats out-blocked Montana, 11.5-5.0.
Sackett had a match-high 18 kills for Montana, leading a team that hit .221 in the match. Janell Sparks had 13 kills, while Richardson added 12 and Silerolia Gaogao 11.
