2014-15 Capital One Academic All-America® Division I Men's Track & Field/Cross Country Teams
ABILENE - Senior distance runner Daniel Block Thursday was tabbed to the 2014-15 Capital One Academic All-America® Division I Men's Track & Field/Cross Country Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
A convergence journalism major with a 3.95 cumulative grade-point average, Block was only one of 45 student-athletes nationwide to make one of the three Academic All-America teams and joined Lamar's Sam Stabler and Incarnate Word's Chris DeWitt as the lone representatives from the Southland Conference. DeWitt received first team honors, while Stabler was assigned to the third team along with Block and competitors from nationally recognized programs from Michigan, Arizona, Penn State, Ohio State, Purdue and Florida State.
Block is a native of Dalmeny, Saskatchewan, who transferred to ACU at the start of the 2013-14 school year following two years at the University of Saskatchewan.
Academically, he has earned his way onto several Southland Conference Commissioner's Honor Rolls in addition to earning the title of Top Scholar from ACU's Department of Journalism and Mass Communication. He posted a 4.0 grade-point average in the spring 2014 semester.
On the track, Block was the Wildcats' leading distance runner for a majority of the 2014 cross country season and during the program's indoor campaign he won the Southland Conference championship in the 800-meter run behind a personal best time of 1:50.01. He also was part of a distance medley relay that placed second in Birmingham, Ala. (10:07.63).
Block competed at only three outdoor meets due to injury, but recorded top-10 showings at the prestigious Texas and Drake Relays before taking third in the Southland 800m (1:52.74).
Since 1963, 58 individual Wildcats have received Academic-All America distinction, beginning with football linebacker Jack Griggs. Soccer's Brie Buschman was the most recent Wildcat prior to Block to receive this prize, as she earned first-team honors in the fall of 2013.
Nebraska senior John Welk, a nutrition science major with a 3.99 G.P.A., was selected as the winner of the Capital One Division I Academic All-America® of the Year award for Division I Men's Track & Field/Cross Country. A two-time All-American, Welk earlier this year was awarded a Big Ten Postgraduate Scholarship and the Big Ten Medal of Honor.
