Women's Tennis falls 4-3 at Stephen F. Austin

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Abilene Christian's women's tennis team suffered another incredibly close defeat for the second time in as many days Monday as Stephen F. Austin held on for a 4-3 over the Wildcats.

ACU won the doubles point behind victories at the No. 2 and 3 positions. Freshman Whitney Williams and Erin Walker cruised to an 8-1 win at No. 2 over Denise Maxl and Macarena Acosta, but the other two matches were decided by a single point. The Wildcats' No. 3 duo of freshmen Lucile Pothier and Carli Knezevic edged Ladyjacks Vivienne Kulicke and Valeria Terentyeva, 9-8, while at No. 1, Brittany Reed and Kaysie Hermsdorf were leading Dhanielly Quevedo and Malena Gordo 8-7 when their match was stopped after ACU clinched the doubles point.

Unfortunately, that would be the only lead the Wildcats would hold as a team because SFA was quick to respond with four consecutive singles victories at the top four positions. Quevedo tied the score at 1-1 with her win at No. 2 over Hermsdorf, 6-2, 6-1, and then Gordo defeated Reed at No. 1 6-2, 6-3 to give the Ladyjacks the lead for good.

Kulicke's 6-2, 6-3 triumph over Pothier made it 3-1 in favor of SFA and Maxl clinched the dual with her win over Walker, 6-2, 7-6.

After the match was decided, both Williams and junior Nada Marjanovic won their contests at No. 5 and 6 in three sets. Williams beat Terentyeva, 7-6, 2-6, 1-0, while Marjanovic defeated Julia Lorca, 6-2, 2-6, 7-6, to remain undefeated this spring at 7-0.

The Wildcats return to action this Friday with an 11:44 a.m. home match vs. Southeastern Louisiana that will begin right after praise chapel at the Eager Tennis Pavilion.
