ABILENE – Abilene Christian soccer brings its two-match winning streak and 3-1-1 Southland Conference record to Houston Baptist Friday for a 5 p.m. match against the Huskies, who enter their fray two points ahead of the Wildcats for second place at 4-1.

The Huskies are tied for second in the Southland with Sam Houston State and sit one point behind leader Stephen F. Austin, which has 13 points and a 4-0-1 record. ACU leapfrogged Southeastern Louisiana in the standings this past weekend as the Lions lost consecutive one-goal matches to HBU and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, while the Wildcats blanked both Northwestern State (2-0) and Central Arkansas (1-0).

A complete defensive effort in which ACU (4-7-2) limited its opposition to 10.0 shots and 3.0 corner kicks per match earned two Wildcats Southland Conference Player of the Week honors. Junior center back Kelsie Roberts was named Defensive Player of the Week, and her classmate Sydney Newton took home Goalkeeper of the Week honors (nine saves).

Junior midfielder Maria Gomez additionally received honorable mention for Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week. She provided an assist on the insurance goal vs. Northwestern State and struck the game-winner on a 19-yard free kick in the final minute of the first half vs. Central Arkansas.

Houston Baptist improved to 6-3-1 overall and 4-0 at home last weekend after taking care of the Lions in overtime and whipping the Nicholls Colonels, 3-1.

Sabriah Spencer headed in a corner kick 4:11 into overtime for her fourth goal of the year that silenced the Lions, and on Sunday vs. Nicholls she headed in the game's first two goals in the eighth and 28th minutes. Of the four goals scored by HBU last weekend, three came off corner kicks.

Picking up the victory in goal Sunday for the Huskies was Katie Turner. She only made two saves on nine shots vs. Nicholls, while on Friday it was Alanis Guevara who beat the Lions on six saves.

ACU and HBU are tied at 1-1 in their all-time series, which started in 2013. The Wildcats won the first match at home, 1-0, and lost last season in Houston, 1-0, on an overtime penalty kick.
