Hoover wins volleyball’s first Southland Player of the Week Award

ABILENE - Abilene Christian senior libero Madison Hoover Monday received the volleyball program's first Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week award from the league's sports information directors after leading the Wildcats to a 3-0 week against Incarnate Word, Lamar and Sam Houston State.
The three wins gave ACU a 4-1 homestand and fourth-place conference record of 4-2 entering this week's road matches at Houston Baptist and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
For her part on defense Hoover dug out 71 of 486 opposing attacks for an average of 5.46 per set (13 sets played). The Flower Mound, Texas, native dug out 15 attacks and provided four aces in a four-set win last Tuesday vs. UIW, and then she recorded her second 30-dig match in a five-day stretch with 31 against Lamar. Hoover capped her week with 25 digs in the Wildcats' 3-2 win over Sam Houston State, which was their first victory over the Bearkats in six matches dating back to 1983.
Hoover started the week with 1445 digs to rank eighth all-time in ACU history, but moved all the way up to fifth with 1516 after surpassing the totals of Ricci Wingett (1493), Michelle Bernhardt (1501) and former head coach Kellen (Morrow) Mock (1510). She is on pace to finish second all-time at ACU as she's only 62 digs away from tying Jessica Mayes' runner-up total of 1578.
Kelsie Edwards is ACU's all-time digs leader with a near-untouchable total of 1948.
With 299 digs on the year Hoover ranks among the top-100 NCAA players and she has two defensive performances that rank among the top-10 this season in the Southland Conference. Her 38 digs vs. SFA on October 3 are second to Ladyjack OJ Olson, who had 39 vs. Corpus Christi, and her 31 digs vs. Lamar are tied for seventh.
Hoover additionally ranks third in the Southland (67th nationally) with 4.67 digs per match and is first in league play (six matches) with 5.88 digs per match. The team also has seen its opponents' attack percentage drop from .262 to .233 since the start of conference play as its held league foes to a .182 average, which is fifth best in the SLC.
