FRISCO, Texas – Southland football newcomers UIW and Abilene Christian meet Saturday in Abilene, Texas, for the Southland Conference Television Network Game of the Week presented by State Farm. The matchup kicks off the syndicated network's 10-game football schedule. Coverage begins at 3 p.m., and will be carried by over 25 affiliates across the region, plus national and online outlets.
In a battle of two former Lone Star Conference rivals, UIW and Abilene Christian will play for the first time as Southland football members. This game marks the opening of league play for the entire Southland. UIW enters the contest with an 0-3 record while Abilene Christian is 1-2.
The Cardinals are seeking their first win of the season after dropping games to Sacramento State, Stephen F. Austin in a non-conference game, and No. 1-ranked North Dakota State. UIW ranks fourth in the Southland in pass defense, allowing 237.3 yards per game through the air. The Cardinals are led defensively by sophomore nose tackle Corey Lee, who leads the team with six tackles for loss for 38 yards. The Cardinals, who have been kept out of the endzone for eight quarters, will look to get something going offensively against the Wildcats and will rely on senior wide receiver Casey Jennings, who leads the team with 15 receptions for 188 yards. UIW will start freshman Breylann McCollum under center for the first time. The 6-2 quarterback is 8-for-15 for 81 yards on the season as a backup.
The Wildcats are coming off their first win over an FBS program in 55 years after rallying to beat Troy, 38-35. ACU leads the league in passing offense with 293.3 yards per game and ranks fourth with 32.0 points per game. Redshirt-sophomore quarterback Parker McKenzie, a two-time conference offensive player of the week, leads the league with a 168.0 passing efficiency. McKenzie has thrown for 880 yards and eight touchdowns with four interceptions on 69 of 96 passing. Defensively, ACU ranks fourth in the league in rushing defense, giving up 136.7 yards per game on the ground and are led by senior Justin Stewart, who ranks fifth with 8.3 tackles per game.
This will be the sixth meeting between the two schools with ACU holding a 4-1 advantage. Last year, the two teams split its season series. The Wildcats took a 40-6 decision at home on Oct. 19, while the Cardinals returned the favor with a 38-31 win in San Antonio on Nov. 9.
The game has been designated as the P4X Foundation Classic as the Cardinals and Wildcats help raise awareness for pediatric cancer and the need for additional funding to be pushed towards research. The P4X (Play4Rex) Foundation was established in 2013 in memory of Rex Fleming, the late son of ACU associate director of athletics Lance Fleming and his wife Jill. Rex battled a brain tumor for two years before succumbing to cancer in November 2012 at the age of 10. September is pediatric cancer awareness month and student-athletes from both teams will wear a special ribbon decal featuring the P4X Foundation logo.
Randy McIlvoy, sports director at KPRC-TV in Houston, will handle play-by-play duties and will be joined in the booth by color analyst Shea Walker, a former Texas A&M receiver and veteran broadcaster. Brooke Bentley, a sports anchor for Houston Southland TV Network affiliate KUBE-TV, will serve as the sideline reporter.
The Southland TV Network, which enters its seventh season in 2014, is set to broadcast 10 football games throughout the season. The network earned its seventh Telly Awards honor this summer, receiving a bronze statuette for live production of last season's Sam Houston State vs. Southeastern Louisiana matchup. In addition, SLCTV has earned a pair of College Sports Media Award distinctions for live event production.
