ACU/Rice Box ScoreABILENE - Abilene Christian's men's tennis team Thursday followed a challenging 7-0 win at Prairie View A&M with a shortened 5-1 loss on the indoor courts of Rice University.
Today's decisions keep the Wildcats' season record even at 9-9. Meanwhile, the Panthers fell to 4-12 with the loss and Rice improved to 8-11 with the victory.
At Prairie View this morning, the Wildcats didn't have the easiest of time keeping the Panthers at bay despite winning all their singles matches in straight sets. Three of those sets, however, went to a 7-5 score, while another was settled in a 7-6 tiebreak.
Nicklas Wingord won his spring debut at No. 1 singles over Jackson Varney, 6-4, 7-5, and the Wildcats' usual No. 1,
Borja Cortés defeated Rasaki Gbadmosi, 6-2, 7-5, at No. 2. Sophomore
Marco Bensley also played up a spot and responded with a 7-5, 6-1 vicotry over Jonathan Dingle at No. 5.
In doubles,
Nico Agritelley and
Guilherme Gesser improved to 7-4 with their 8-3 at No. 2 over Bruno Snyder and Daniel Vasquez, and at the top position, Cortés and
Jason Proctor won their first match together, beating Varney and Gbadmosi, 8-5. Bensley and
Michael Morris completed the doubles sweep with their 8-7 triumph over David Aldaz and Carlos McIntyre.
Against Rice, the teams could only play three simultaneous matches and opted to cancel doubles as thunderstorms forced the match indoors. This move also delayed the start of the match by several hours.
The Owls, howeve, didn't waste much building their lead as No. 2 and 3 singles players Adam Gustafsson and Max Andrews scored two fast victories over Wingord and Gesser in straight sets. Gustafsson beat Wingord, 6-1, 6-1 and Gesser lost to Andrews, 6-0, 6-1.
Rice's No. 4 and 5 competitors (David Warren and Gustavo Gonzalez) also jumped out to big leads in the first sets over Proctor and Agritelley; however, the Wildcat freshman came back to win his second set, 6-3, while Proctor put a considerable fight in his before bowing, 6-3, 6-4.
Agritelley went on to win his match in three sets, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3, but Bensley at No. 6 was edged by Henrik Munch, 6-5, 6-2.
Cortés won his first set at No. 1 vs. Srikar Alla, 6-3, but then lost the second and third by scores of 6-1 and 6-4.
The Wildcats are scheduled to play at Schreiner University Friday at 10 a.m. before coming home Saturday to play host to Nicholls at 12:30 p.m. in between the women's tennis doubleheader with the Colonels and McNeese State.
