Farquharson and Walker join Kerjean as John Jacobs Invitational champions

Results

NORMAN, Okla. - Sophomore Johnathan Farquharson won the 100-meter dash and freshman Kenzie Walker took first place in the pole vault during the second and final day of competition at Oklahoma's John Jacobs Invitational.

The Wildcats were just one of a handful of schools invited to particpate at this weekend's event in addition to North Texas, Oklahoma State, Tulsa and SMU. ACU's men's team scored 108 points to finish as the runner-up to Oklahoma (197), while the Wildcats' women's team finished fourth of five schools with 61 points.

Walker's victory was her third of the season and second outdoors as she registered a personal record height of 12 feet-2.5 inches (3.72 meters) to beat 11 other competitiors. The Abilene native passed on the first three heights before clearing heights of 3.47, 3.62 and 3.72 meters on her first attempts. Unfortunately, she failed to clear 3.85 meters - a height that would have given her sixth place on ACU's all-time performance list.

Alyssa McCarthic - a sophomore from Central Oklahoma - was second to Walker as she attained a top height of 11-10.5 (3.62 meters).

In addition to Walker's PR, other career bests were recorded today by Shaunice Guyton in 100m (12.26), Michaela Hackett in the 1500m (5:05.66), and Taylor Yantis in the 100m hurdles (15.14) and javelin (104-5/31.82m).

Farquharson won the 100-meter dash in 10.54 seconds to give him his first individual victory of the outdoor season and first since sweeping the sprints at the indoor Husky Invitational at Washington. Second to the ACU sophomore was North Texas freshman Collin Heard (10.65), while third-place went to Mean Green sophomore Kedron Sowells (10.78).

Farquharson today also clocked a time of 21.63 to place fifth in the 200m, and ran anchor for the 4x100-meter relay that placed second to North Texas with a time of 41.01. The Mean Green team finished its race in 40.89, and Oklahoma was third in 41.52.

Farquharson didn't post any PRs today, but several of his teammates did, including freshmen Isaiah McFail in the 200m (22.62), Reid Rivers in the 1500m (4:13.37) and Deandre Key in the javelin (140-8/42.88m).

During last night's events at the Jacobs Invitational, ACU senior Baptiste Kerjean won the hammer throw with a top effort of 216-08 (66.05m).

"John, Kenzie and Baptiste were great in practice all week and I am so proud of of how hard we competed as well as the high character this team displayed," said ACU head coach Keith Barnier. "We faced some tremendous competition here in Oklahoma."

The Wildcats return to action next week for the prestigous Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa. The five-day meet starts Wednesday, April 23.
