ABILENE - Less than 24 hours removed from a pair of troubling defeats to Tyler Junior College and Trinity University, the Abilene Christian men's tennis team rebounded Saturday with convincing back-to-back victories over Texas-Permian Basin and McMurry.
The Wildcats began their day with a 5-2 win over the Falcons on the outdoor courts of the Eager Tennis Pavilion, and then moved indoors to beat the War Hawks, 5-2, in the nightcap held at the Teague Events Center.
ACU won five of six doubles matches today and eight of the 12 singles contests. One of those defeats, however, was the result of an injury to
Nicklas Wingord at No. 2. The sophomore withdrew from his match vs. Felipe Cruz with the second set tied at 5-5.
Wingord won earlier in the day vs. Permian Basin's Jonathan Rutledge, 6-3, 6-1, and later teamed with Borja Cortés to shut out the McMurry No. 1 doubles team of Chris Breaux and Casjen Rico, 6-0.
Cortés went 4-0 today, starting with a 6-3 doubles win with
Guilherme Gesser over UT-PB's Rutledge and Justin Pena followed by a three-set thriller at No. 1 singles over Pena, 6-3, 5-6, 6-3.
Also going 2-0 today in singles were Gesser at No. 3 and freshman
Nico Agritelley, who beat UT-PB's Edgar Lazcano at No. 4 and McMurry's Preston Steblein at No. 5.
The Wildcats return to action next Saturday, Feb. 8 with a match scheduled for 11 a.m. at SMU.
