ABILENE – The heated rivalry between former Lone Star Conference foes Abilene Christian and Midwestern State will add another chapter to its seven-year series Tuesday night when the teams collide at 5 p.m. in Wichita Falls.
MSU leads the all-time series against the Wildcats, 7-5-1, after eliminating ACU in the first round of last year's Lone Star Conference Championship. Before that, however, the Wildcats had won five of seven meetings, including a second-round NCAA Championship match in 2011.
The Wildcats are off to a great start this season at 4-0-1 after they upended both John Brown and Drury on the road by scores of 5-0 and 2-1 (2OT).
ACU's 5-0 win over the Golden Eagles was its largest margin of victory since beating Angelo State by the same score during the first round of the NCAA D-II Championship on Nov. 12, 2010, and its victory at Drury extended its overtime unbeaten streak to eight matches. The Wildcats haven't lost a match in overtime since No. 12 Florida Southern edged them in September of 2010.
Senior forward Andrea Carpenter was magnificent in both of last weekend's games. She finished two Alyssa Gerner assists in the blowout win at John Brown and then scored twice more against Drury in the 39th and 102nd minutes. Carpenter now has six goals through five games after having five during all of last year's injury-shortened season.
The Amarillo native's career totals now stand at 110 points and 49 goals as she is program record holder in both categories. Her last four-goal weekend took place between Sept. 30 and Oct. 2, 2011 vs. Texas Woman's and Texas A&M-Commerce.
Among the Southland Conference leaders, Carpenter ranks first in goals (6) and points (14) and third in shots with 17. She is also in a tie for fifth with two assists.
Defensively, ACU received consistent play from all of its starters as they shutout John Brown on six shots (three on goal) and limited Drury to three attempts (two on goal) though two overtimes. Neither opponent recorded a single corner kick.
ACU now has two shutouts this year and two games in which the opponent was limited to a single goal. The Wildcat goalkeeping tandem of Sydney Newton and Kelsey Dombrowski are ranked seventh and eighth, respectively, among the league's GAA leaders at 0.70 and 0.80.
Midwestern State is just one weekend into its 2013 campaign and off to a 1-1 start after following a 1-0 win over Colorado Mesa with a 2-0 loss to Fort Lewis. Forward Kensli Pounds has the Mustangs' lone goal, while goalkeeper Kallie Essary has made 11 saves in 180 minutes.
