Wildcats defeat Wayland Baptist to enter conference schedule at 6-0-1

Box Score

PLAINVIEW, Texas - The Abilene Christian women's soccer team Saturday finished the non-conference portion of its schedule unbeaten at 6-0-1 after shutting out Wayland Baptist, 2-0, on four shots at J.V. Hilliard Field.

The Wildcats' start is their best since 2011 when they didn't lose a single match until the championship round of the Lone Star Conference Tournament. The Pioneers, meanwhile, fell to 3-2 as ACU remains undefeated all-time vs. NAIA schools at 9-0.

ACU today fired 11 shots, placed eight on goal, and received scores from senior Jacey Ferrara in the 32nd minute and freshman Natalie Throneberry in the 61st.

Senior Andrea Carpenter assisted on Ferrara's header into the bottom right corner to extend her consecutive-point streak to a fifth match. The Amarillo native has scored at least one point in every match but one and is ranked among the Southland Conference leaders in the three primary offensive categories (16 pts./6 goals/4 assists).

Carpenter's four assists matched her career season high from her freshman year of 2010. Ferrara's goal was her second of the year.

Throneberry's goal was assisted by Alyssa Gerner. A native of McKinney, Texas, Throneberry dribbled past a defender to her left after receiving the ball from Gerner and then flipped the ball over the head of goalkeeper Keri Myers. The score was Throneberry's second of the season, and for Gerner it was her third assist.

"We had chances to score a few more today then what we did, but Wayland was up for the game and played us tough," said head coach Casey Wilson. "I thought we played much better in the second half and it felt good to get a win as we head into conference play."

Today's team defensive effort - which included only one opposing corner kick and shot on goal - resulted in the Wildcats' fourth shutout of the season, lowering the team's GAA to 0.54. The Wildcats' haven't allowed a goal since the 53rd minute of their double overtime match at Drury, pushing their scoreless minute streak to 239 minutes.

ACU begins its 12-match Southland Conference slate Friday at 4 pm. vs. Sam Houston State University. The Bearkats are 2-3-1 on the season and will play at SMU Monday night before their arrival in the Key City.
