LUBBOCK - Senior Chloe Susset was victorious in her first 3,000-meter steeplechase race of the 2013 outdoor season, which was one of three wins recorded by the Wildcats Saturday at the Texas Tech Open.
Susset crossed the finish line with an altitude-adjusted and NCAA provisional qualifying time of 10:48.79 that currently ranks her seventh among all NCAA D-II competitors. Susset beat the remainder of the field by almost an entire minute as Dalia Lopez of New Mexico Junior College posted a runner-up time of 11:56.26.
Susset, who recently earned her first all-America citation earlier this year in the indoor mile, is a three-time Lone Star Conference champion and two time NCAA qualifier in the steeplechase. Her career best steeplechase time of 10:24.65 was recorded last year at Stanford's Payton Jordan Invitational, which was good for fifth place in her section.
Also winning for the Wildcats at the Terry and Linda Fuller Track & Field Complex were hammer throwers Shalania Lakey and Baptiste Kerjean. Lakey and her teammate Lauren Hardwick finished first and second for the second straight week in this event with distances of 164 feet - 5 inches (50.11 meters) and 154-6 (47.10m), respectively, while Kerjean won for the second time in three tries behind a top effort of 198-0 (60.35m).
Lakey's and Kerjean's throws were two of seven provisional marks recorded this weekend by ACU. Others were attained by Andrew Hudson (170-3/51.90m) and Tara Riley in the discus (143-8/43.79m), Johnathan Farquharson (21.23) and Shennae Steele (24.42) in the 200-meter dash, and Ayesha Rumble in the 800m (2:11.22).
Rumble's time was a season best and pushed her national ranking up to fifth place, while Farquharson's mark in the 200m currently ranks him 10th.
The Wildcats return to the panhandle next week for the West Texas A&M Open and Multi in Canyon.
