SOUTHLAKE, Texas – Abilene Christian's fifth-ranked women's tennis team pitched its second straight shutout and 13th of the spring following Friday night's 5-0 win over No. 30 Incarnate Word in the semifinals of the
Lone Star Conference Championship hosted by the Southlake Tennis Center.
The Wildcats (25-5) have now won 12 straight duals since falling to No. 1 Armstrong Atlantic in Las Vegas on March 14, and tomorrow they'll go after their 23rd conference crown against Midwestern State or Tarleton State. ACU beat the Mustangs, 6-3, during the regular season, and the TexAnns, 8-1.
ACU again was without its No. 1 competitor and LSC Player of the Year
Julia Mongin, but her absence didn't come close to slowing down the Wildcats. The all-America No. 1 tandem of
Hannah Kelley and
Micah Hermsdorf finished ACU's sweep of doubles with its 8-6 win over Ivana Katavic and Andi Botha, while at No. 2, the duo of
Laura Mongin and
Brittney Reed cruised past Nicole Karaklis and Malisa Vatanadilok, 8-1.
At No. 3 doubles, the freshman duo of
Kaysie Hermsdorf and
Jamie Lee Denton topped Taryn Strahl and Jennifer Betancourt, 8-4.
Singles competition lasted all of two matches.
Laura Mongin made quick work of Botha at No. 3, 6-0, 6-0, and
Kaysie Hermsdorf clinched the victory with her 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 5 over Vatanadilok.
