Wildcats maul McMurry in final tune-up before conference championships

ABILENE – Abilene Christian's nationally ranked men's and women's tennis teams convincingly defeated their crosstown rivals from McMurry Wednesday night on the outdoor courts of the Eager Tennis Pavilion.

The fifth-ranked ACU women won 9-0 for their 10th shutout of the season, while the 16th-ranked Wildcats' men's team won 7-2 with its lone defeats coming at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles

Six of the men's singles victories came in straight sets, but Christiano Mendes pushed Alfredo Desiati at No. 5 before the Wildcat senior finally prevailed, 7-5, 7-6 (2). And at No. 2 singles, sophomore Guilherme Gesser topped Felipe Cruz in three sets, 6-4, 4-6 and 10-4.

Senior all-America Hans Hach, meanwhile, won his team-best 16th match at No. 1 singles, beating Chris Breaux, 6-2, 6-2. Hach and Gesser also won at No. 1 doubles over Breaux and Casjen Rico, 8-2.

On the women's side, several of the singles matches were completed in 45 minutes or less as the Wildcats' top five players (Micah Hermsdorf, Brittney Reed, Laura Mongin, Hannah Kelley and Kaysie Hermsdorf) either pitched a double-bagel victory or won by a 6-1, 6-0 combination.

Emily Conrad won ACU's match at No. 6 singles, 6-3, 6-1, over Brandy Curry for her 12th win of the spring.

As a team, the ACU women have won 72 percent of its singles matches (113-44) and 85 percent of its doubles following tonight's sweep that pushed their record to 63-11.

Next up for the Wildcats is a trip to Southlake, Texas for the Lone Star Conference Championships. ACU's men's team received the No. 2 seed and will play third-seeded Incarnate Word in second semifinal Friday at 4:30 p.m.

The top-seeded ACU women will play their first match Friday at 6:30 p.m. vs. the winner of Incarnate Word and Cameron.

ACU has won every conference championship on the women's side since the tournament's inception with the exceptions of 1983, 1984, 1998, 2001, 2003 and 2007.

The ACU men have won the last four LSC championships and 13 since 1983.
