BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Led by a runner-up performance from senior Amanda Ouedraogo in the triple jump, Abilene Christian's women's track and field team finished 10th with 24 points Saturday at the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships hosted by The Birmingham CrossPlex.
Academy of Art, which is based in California, earned the women's title in its first opportunity to compete in a D-II postseason with 59 points, while Lincoln (Mo.) edged Grand Canyon for second place, 48.5 to 45. The two-time defending champions from Grand Valley State placed fourth with 41 points.
Ouedraogo – a five-time all-America and 2012 indoor triple jump champion – once again had to settle for second place on the national stage after losing out to her rival, Kearah Danville, of Angelo State. These two competitors ranked first or second all season long, and even though Ouedraogo was victorious at the Lone Star Conference Championships, she could not do so again after topping out at 41 feet-09.25 inches (12.73 meters) on her third attempt.
Danville led from the start with a first-round distance of 41-09.75 (12.74m), but then surpassed the 13.00-meter threshold on her fifth attempt, landing at 43-02.25 (13.16m). Ouedraogo followed with a mark of 40-08.25 (12.40m) before fouling out in round six.
Luckily for the fans of Danville and Ouedraogo, these two will likely compete head-to-head several times during the outdoor regular season and are virtual locks for the national championships.
On the track, newcomer Reyare Thomas collected three all-America citations today as she placed fifth in the 60-meter dash (7.45 seconds), fourth in the 200m (23.51), and fifth as part of the 4x400m-relay (3:45.40) that also featured seniors Shennae Steele and Ayesha Rumble and sophomore Elea Diarra.
All of Thomas' marks were season bests as she lowered the school's varsity record in the 200m for the fourth time this year.
ACU's 4x400m relay recorded the fastest time out of any of the first three sections, but the Wildcats were eventually surpassed by all four teams in the final heat led by Lincoln's winning time of 3:40.07. Placing second to fourth were Grand Canyon (3:41.54), Academy of Art (3:43.48) and UMass Lowell (3:44.04).
As the first and third legs of the relay, Steele and Rumble have now combined for eight all-America titles over the past one and a half seasons. Rumble has been part of three all-America relays and placed fourth at last year's outdoor championship in the 800m, while Steele has been part of four all-America relays, including three in the 4x400m.
Individual all-America honors were presented today for the first time to Diarra, freshman Jonathan Farquharson and senior Chloe Susset. Both Diarra (400m, 54.81) and Farquharson (60m, 6.80) placed seventh in their respective events, while Susset – a five-time LSC Champion and two-time NCAA qualifier in the steeplechase – recorded her first top-eight performance at nationals with an eighth-place time in the mile of 4:54.37.
Farquharson's two team points in the 60m were the only ones earned by the men's team this weekend.
