ABILENE - Abilene Christian's nationally third-ranked women's tennis team extended its winning streak to three matches following Saturday's home doubleheader sweep of Texas-El Paso and Texas-Permian Basin.
ACU (15-5) defeated the Miners, 4-2, this morning on the indoor courts of the Teague Events Center, and then blanked the Falcons, 6-0, during the late afternoon. The dual between Wildcats and Falcons didn't include doubles since ACU had to make its drive to San Antonio tonight for tomorrow's twin bill at St. Mary's and Texas-San Antonio.
ACU won all three doubles matches and three of six singles contests vs. UTEP. Senior and fifth-ranked
Julia Mongin led the Wildcats from the top as she defeated Rebeca Calvillo at the No. 1 position, 6-1, 6-4, for her ninth win of the season. She also defeated Calvillo - and Martina Trierweiler - at No. 1 doubles, 8-2, with partner
Brittney Reed to improve to 7-2.
Micah Hermsdorf won a hard-fought match at No. 2 over Trierweiler, 7-6 (1), 7-6 (6), and earlier paired with
Hannah Kelley in an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles vs. Marie LeBlond and Gabi Vazquez.
Kelley's singles match at No. 6 vs. Anastasiya Sylenko went unfinished, but by then the match had already been clinched by the Wildcats.
Senior
Emily Conrad was a double winner at No. 5 for ACU today as she followed her win vs. UTEP's Matilda Rose Tench, 6-0, 6-1, with a double-bagel victory over UTPB's Shelbey Greene.
Also beating the Falcons today were
Kaysie Hermsdorf at No. 1, Reed at No. 2, Kelley at No. 3, freshman
Nada Marjanovic at No. 4 and freshman
Jamie Lee Denton at No. 6. The closest single-set score between the Wildcats and Falcons was 6-2.
