ABILENE – A full compliment of Abilene Christian's men's and women's track and field student-athletes will be in action this Friday and Saturday when Texas-Arlington plays host to the 37th-annual Bobby Lane Invitational at Maverick Stadium.
The meet, which begins Friday at 2 p.m. with the hammer throw and concludes Saturday at 7:30 p.m. with the men's 4x400-meter relay, will serve as the 2013 outdoor season debut for many of ACU's indoor national participants. This list includes sprinters Elea Diarra, Johnathan Farquharson, Jordan Geary and Reyare Thomas, mid-distance runners Ayesha Rumble and Chloe Susset, jumper Amanda Ouedraogo and thrower Baptiste Kerjean.
Senior all-America Shennae Steele was the only ACU indoor qualifier to compete at last week's outdoor season opener at the TCU Invitational, where she placed fifth in the 400m with a time of 57.86.
In the field events, meanwhile, throwers Andrew Hudson and Ameilia Mitchell were the lone Wildcats to post NCAA provisional qualifying distances in their respective events.
Hudson won his discus flight at TCU's Lowdon Track and Field Complex with a mark of 172 feet (52.43 meters), and Mitchell placed third in the javelin with her launch of 134-03 (40.92).
Nearly all of ACU's throwers were outstanding at last year's Bobby Lane Invitational, led by Kerjean, who recorded a hammer throw of 199-5 that ranked him first among all D-II athletes.
Also starting last year's outdoor campaign with personal records were Shalania Lakey (128-3) and Tara Riley (146-10) in the discus and Lauren Hartwick in the hammer (156-8). Aaron Bynum posted a career bests in the hammer (149-7) and javelin (172-2), while Cassie Brooks - a heptathlete - registered her first javelin throw over 100 feet (100-5).
Ouedraogo returns to Bobby Lane as its defending triple jump champion. The senior recorded a top distance of 40-10.50 (12.46m), which beat SMU runner-up Courtney Madden's mark by more than three feet (37-05.00/11.40m).
On the track last spring at UTA, Geary placed third in the second section of the 400m (48.22), while Rumble was her flight's runner-up in the 1500m (4:49.26). Susset tied for tenth with Sarah Rayas of Dallas Baptist in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 12:36.40.
Heat sheets and a live scoring link will be posted at UTAMavs.com either Thursday or Friday.
Last year's Bobby Lane field included Oklahoma and TCU as well as several Lone Star Conference teams from Angelo State, Commerce, Incarnate Word and Tarleton State.
