DON KIRBY OPEN HEAT SHEETS
ABILENE – The Abilene Christian men's and sixth-ranked women's track and field teams will once again travel Saturday to the Albuquerque Convention Center for the Don Kirby Open hosted by the University of New Mexico.
Events begin at 9:30 a.m. with the women's weight throw and ends at 3:45 p.m. with the women's 4x400. Competition for the Wildcats will include many of the Lobos' best athletes as well as squads from Arizona, Kansas State and Washington State.
The Wildcats' women's team skyrocketed up to No. 6 in the USTFCCA D-II national rankings posted earlier this week. ACU began the season ranked 22nd, and then after dropping a spot to 23rd, bounced all the way up to 14th following an exceptional weekend at the New Mexico Invitational.
ACU leapt an additional eight spots in this week's poll thanks to a record-breaking performance in the 200-meter dash by junior Reyare Thomas and a season-best triple jump from senior Amanda Ouedraogo. Both of these efforts were recorded at the Armory Collegiate Invitational and netted each a Lone Star Conference Athlete of the Week award.
Ouedraogo has won the conference's weekly citation the last three weeks, lifting the program's season total to eight.
Thomas set a new school record of 23.98 seconds in 200m to finish ninth overall and qualify her for the NCAA D-II Championships. Thomas' time bested former Wildcat Kim Prathers' record of 24.26 from 2009 and currently ranks her fourth among all NCAA D-II competitors this season.
Thomas is the third Wildcat this season to record a NCAA automatic qualifying mark, joining Elea Diarra (400m) and Ouedraogo, who surpassed Angelo State's Kearah Danville in the D-II rankings following her second-place leap of 42-feet-0 inches (12.80m). Freshman LaQue Moen-Davis of Texas A&M edged Ouedraogo for the Armory triple jump title by a mere three-quarters of an inch (.02 meters).
Thomas last weekend also improved her national ranking in the 60m to seventh after recording a 22nd-place time of 7.55. Diarra, meanwhile, placed 19th in the 400m prelims with a NCAA provisional time of 55.24.
Also improving their national ranking last week were Shennae Steele in the 200m (14th), Ayesha Rumble in the 800m (16th) and Chloe Susset in the 3K (16th).
ACU's men's team slipped three spots to 29th in the D-II poll despite receiving season-best marks from freshman Xavier King in the 5K (14:55.31) and senior Baptiste Kerjean in the weight throw (60-6.5/18.45m). Kerjean's second-place toss at the Red Raider Open earned him his second consecutive Lone Star Conference Field Athlete of the Week award.
Freshman Johnathan Farquharson leads ACU in the individual rankings as he is currently ninth in the 60m (6.80) and 11th in the 200m (21.60). Senior Jordan Geary is two spots behind Farquharson in the 200m rankings (21.73) and is 14th in the 400m (48.44).
Kerjean is the No. 8 weight thrower in D-II, while senior heptathletes Matthew Stark and Parker Petty rank 17th and 21st, respectively, with point totals of 4,807 and 4,714.
