PORTALES, N.M. -- ACU missed four shots in the final 29 seconds Saturday afternoon as the Wildcats dropped a 65-64 heartbreaker to Eastern New Mexico at Greyhound Arena.
The loss drops the hard-luck Wildcats to 10-10 overall and 4-8 in the Lone Star Confernece, while the Greyhounds improve to 9-11 and 6-6. ACU -- which has lost back-to-back games after winning five of its previous six games -- will be back in action Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. when it goes back on the road to take on Texas A&M-Commerce in Commerce.
The Wildcats, who lost to ENMU 62-60 on Dec. 1 in Abilene on a last-second layup by Rodney Blackmon, trailed the Greyhounds 65-61 before
Steven Werner converted a three-point play with 1:03 to play to bring his team to within 65-64.
After Blackmon missed a jumper with 45 seconds left,
Cornelius Cammock grabbed the defensive rebound to give the Wildcats the chance at a huge road win.
Eric Lawton missed with 29 seconds left, but Werner grabbed the offensive rebound to give the Wildcats a chance at the last shot of the game. Lawton missed another jumper with 24 seconds left when Phil Henry blocked the shot out of bounds. With the clock running down, the Wildcats called timeout with seven seconds to play to set up the final play.
Cammock got the ball inside but missed with one second left. Freshman guard
Parker Wentz knifed inside and got the tip-in, but it wouldn't fall as the buzzer sounded and the Wildcats had dropped another heartbreaker to the Greyhounds.
Werner, Lawton and
Elliott Lloyd led the Wildcats in scoring with 18, 14 and 13 points, respectively. Lawton led the Wildcats in rebounding with 7 boards as ACU out-rebounded the Greyhounds 43-34.
An otherwise even game might have been decided beyond the arc where the Greyhounds hit nine 3-pointers to ACU's four (two by Wentz and two Lloyd).
