ABILENE – Abilene Christian's nationally ranked men's and women's tennis teams each posted a pair of convincing sweeps Saturday outdoors at the Eager Tennis Pavilion.
The No. 3 women shutout Hardin-Simmons and Western New Mexico by a combined score of 16-0, while the No. 11 men topped the Cowboys 9-0 before beating the No. 30 Mustangs, 8-1.
The two Wildcat teams combined to defeat D-III HSU in just under three hours as no ACU singles player or doubles tandem dropped a set.
Each of ACU's singles players competed at their highest positions of the season led by No. 1 players Borja Cortes and
Nada Marjanovic. Cortes won his match over Michael McCullough, 6-1, 6-3, while Marjanovic captured hers over Genene Haddad, 6-4, 6-1.
At the No. 2, 3 and 4 spots on the women's side,
Kaysie Hermsdorf,
Emily Conrad and
Jamie Lee Denton all posted two-set shutouts of their opposition.
Winning for the men's team from the 2 to 6 singles positions were
Nicklas Wingord,
Jason Proctor,
Marco Bensley,
Kyle Plum and
Brandon McCarty, who defeated Dylan Price, 6-1, 6-0, in his season debut.
Hach and Wingord won their second straight match together at No. 1 doubles, beating the HSU team of McCullough and Chavez, 8-1. Cortes and Proctor doubled up Frankie Sanchez and Jesse Rawlings at No. 2, 8-4, and Bensley and Plum ripped Jordan Wilson and Justin Fry, 8-1.
The No. 1 team of Hermsdorf and Conrad and the No. 2's of Marjanovic and Denton each won their season debuts together in women's doubles.
Against the Mustangs, it was business as usual for ACU's women's team it recorded its third-straight shutout and fourth of the season. Fifth-ranked senior
Julia Mongin led her team from the top, winning 6-2, 6-0 over Ganna Tiurina at No. 1 singles and with
Brittney Reed in doubles, 8-1, over Tiurina and Ashley Newell.
Reed also won at No. 2 singles, followed by Marjanovic at No. 3, Denton at No. 4, Conrad at No. 5 and Hermsdorf at No. 6. ACU's No. 3 to 6 players all went 2-0 today in singles, improving the team's overall mark there to 34-7 (.829).
Some of the ACU men's players were at different positions against Western New Mexico as they battled their way back from injury.
Senior and 45th-ranked
Alfredo Desiati played his first game in 11 days and was a 6-4, 6-3 winner at No. 6 over Jorge Carretero. Sophomore
Guilherme Gesser also played down a spot at No. 4, but still came through with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Alvaro Nunez.
The slight injuries to some of the ACU veterans allowed Wingord to stay at No. 2 – and he did not disappoint – defeating Juan Pablo Fuentes, 6-1, 6-2. Proctor also held steady at No. 5, recording a 6-4, 6-2 win vs. Roy Ulibarri.
Senior and No. 2 nationally ranked singles player
Hans Hach extended his winning streak to six after beating No. 30 Rodrigo Almeida, 6-3, 6-4. He and Cortes also remain undefeated in doubles at 5-0 following their 8-3 win vs. Almeida and Fuentes.
The two teams return to action the week of Feb. 25. The women will play at Kentucky and Northern Kentucky, while the men will stay home to face University of the Southwest and Texas-Permian Basin.
