Soccer's season ends in overtime at McNeese State

Box Score

LAKE CHARLES, La. - Abilene Christian's first season as a NCAA Division I member of the Southland Conference came to an end Sunday in the 94th minute of overtime when Tori Lasiter of McNeese State headed in the game-winner, sending the Cowgirls to a 1-0 victory over the Wildcats.

Lasiter's golden-goal, which was her fifth of the season, was assisted by Krista Steinbeiser and lifted the Cowgirls' season record to 5-10-2. The Wildcats, meanwhile, finished their year with the third-most wins in team history at 13-5-1 (.711) and were 7-5 against the Southland Conference.

The shutout was credited to Maggie Marks, who made four saves over 93 minutes and 12 seconds as her defense limited ACU to 12 shots and none in the overtime period. The Wildcats also earned just three corner kick attempts and had several shots blocked.

Senior Andrea Carpenter was one of five Wildcats to share the team lead in shots with two, along with Jacey Ferrara, Nicci Nelson, Whitley Lindholm and Madison Brown.

Sydney Newton started and played the entire first half for ACU and made four saves. Her classmate Kelsey Dombrowski then saved two shots in a scoreless second half before surrendering Lasiter's game winner three minutes into the bonus period.

Both goalkeepers are expected to come back to next year's team as will several additional starters: forward Natalie Throneberry, midfielders Nelson, Brown, Sarah Schoch and Alyssa Gerner, and defenders Katie Stivers, Kelsie Roberts and Emily Sumrall.
