Carpenter Scores Year's First Goal In 3-1 Loss At Incarnate Word

SAN ANTONIO - Andrea Carpenter's goal in the 83rd minute was all the scoring Abilene Christian could muster in its 3-1 defeat Friday night at Incarnate Word.

The Lone Star Conference loss dropped ACU's record to 2-3 (0-1 LSC), while the Cardinals improved to 3-2 (1-0 LSC). UIW's last win against the Wildcats prior to tonight came in September of 2009.

Carpenter, a junior, had missed three of the first four matches this year due to injury, but in her first match back she contributed 68 minutes and two shots on goal. Her unassisted score was her first of 2012 and 39th of her illustrious career.

The two sides played a scoreless first half, but six minutes into the second period the Cardinals were given a penalty kick after Lexi Stirling was red carded for a hand ball in front of the goal following a UIW corner kick.

Samantha Johnson converted the penalty kick for her first goal of the season and would later assist on Jazma Latu's score in the 80th minute. In between for the Cardinals, Katie Miller snuck a 20-yard shot under the crossbar near the close of the 65th minute.

UIW outshot the Wildcats, 16-7, and placed seven shots on goal. ACU goalkeeper Arielle Moncure made seven saves, while her counterpart Heather Kowalik was credited with three.

The Wildcats return to action Sunday at Angelo State. ACU is 2-0 on Sunday's this season and has beaten the Rambelles in six of seven meetings.
