EL PASO, Texas - Abilene Christian's sixth-ranked women's tennis team responded to yesterday's 4-3 defeat at New Mexico State with a focused 6-1 victory vs. UTEP Saturday morning at the El Paso Tennis Club.
The win lifted ACU's season record to 18-3, while the Miners fell to 2-15. The Wildcats also improved to 10-1 in March, 9-3 on the road, and 5-3 vs. NCAA DI schools.
For head coach
Hutton Jones, these last two matches were exactly what the Wildcats needed going into next week's conference and regional dual vs. Midwestern State.
"There were no easy matches this weekend," he said. "All the players we faced were highly recruited, but today we played with more purpose in singles. Yesterday we weren't on task, and I think part of it had to do with being too 'up' after doubles and people were assuming someone else was going to win. Today, though, we came into singles with blinders on and had an attitude of, 'I'm gonna get mine done.' "
ACU started the dual with a 1-0 lead for the second straight day after winning two of three doubles matches. Even though the top-line and nationally ranked duo of
Micah Hermsdorf and
Hannah Kelley lost, 8-1, the No. 3 team of
Julia Mongin and
Emily Conrad dominated Dariya Abdrakhmanova and Anastasiya Sylenko, 8-1, and then
Brittney Reed and
Laura Mongin held off Gabi Vazquez and Marie LeBlond, 8-6.
The Wildcats continued to take care of business in singles, where they won five of six matches in straight sets.
Laura Mongin nicely rebounded from Friday's three-set loss with 'double bagel' victory at No.3 over Gabi Vazquez, and her twin sister, Julia, again won at No. 1, this time beating Martina Trierweiler, 6-3, 6-2.
Reed and Kelley beat their respective opponents at the No.4 and 5 positions by matching scores of 6-4, 6-1, and Conrad twice doubled up Carolina DeLuca, 6-3, 6-3.
Hermsdorf suffered a 6-1, 6-4 loss at No. 2 to 2. Rebeca Calvillo.
Throughout the month of March, ACU's eight singles players combined for an overall record of 58-6 (.906) led by
Julia Mongin who went 10-0 between the No. 1 (9-0) and 2 lines. Reed won 10 of 11 matches, while three others won on nine occasions.
ACU's doubles tandems were just as commanding as they compiled a 30-3 (.909) mark in March. Hermsdorf and Kelley finished the month 8-1 at No. 1, and the Mongin sisters went 6-0.
The Wildcats' clash with Midwestern State is slated for Wednesday, April 4 at 5 p.m. at ACU's Eager Tennis Pavilion.
