ABILENE -- Texas A&M-Kingsville scord 11 combined runs in the fourth and fifth innings Saturday afternoon to beat ACU 12-7 and salvage the final game of a three-game Lone Star Conference softball series at Wells Field.
The loss drops the Wildcats to 20-9 overall and 6-5 in the LSC, while the Javelinas improve to 13-19 and 2-10. ACU will be back in action next weekend when it hosts West Texas A&M in a key three-game LSC series at Wells Field.
The Wildcats took a 5-1 lead into the fourth inning after scoring five runs of their own in the bottom of the third. But the Javelinas hammered out six hits and took advantage of a key error in right field to get on top 8-5.
Lex Cordova had a two-run single to center in the inning, and Kodie Garner capped the inning when she stepped in with two outs and the bases loaded and lined a pitch into right field. The single drove in two runs and when the ball got past ACU rightfielder Lyndi Smith for an error, a third run scored to make it 8-5.
In the fifth, the Javelinas had three more hits and took advantage of another ACU error to push their lead to 11-6. Kayle Villanueva had the big hit in the inning with a three-run double to left-center.
Caitlyn Crain was saddled with the loss for the Wildcats as she falls to 9-2 on the season. Brianna Fowlkes and Sara Vaughn each home runs for the Wildcats, who left 12 runners on base in the game, including three in the fourth, two in the fifth and three in the sixth.
