Wildcats Sweep Lone Star Conference Doubleheader

ABILENE - Abilene Christian's sixth-ranked women's tennis team won both ends of a home doubleheader Friday at the Eager Tennis Pavilion, beating Lone Star Conference rivals Incarnate Word, and No. 20 Tarleton State, by scores of 9-0 and 8-1.

The victories improved the Wildcats' season record to 10-2 overall and 3-0 vs. the Lone Star Conference. They play again Sunday at home vs. No. 10 Rollins at noon.

Today ACU welcomed third-ranked junior Julia Mongin back to the lineup after missing the past three matches with an illness, and the 2011 All-America showed no signs of rust. Mongin first beat Incarnate Word's Maggae Doney 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 2 position, before returning to No. 1 later in the afternoon to defeat the South Central Region's No. 9 player Alicia Perez of Tarleton State, 6-1, 6-4.

Mongin also won doubles matches with partners Hannah Kelly, and twin sister, Laura. Julia Mongin is now 6-1 as a doubles player this season and 5-1 in singles.

Five additional Wildcats also went 2-0 today while winning in straight sets, including No. 12 Micah Hermsdorf, No. 39 Brittney Reed, Laura Mongin, Emily Conrad, and Hannah Kelley. Conrad and Kelley played at five and six, respectively, but the coaches flipped Hermsdorf and Julia Mongin between 1 and 2, and switched Reed and Laura Mongin between 3 and 4.

But no matter where they play in the lineup, each Wildcat has figured out a way to win as evidenced by a combined singles mark of 61-10 (.859).  The No. 1 and 5 players are each 9-3, while the 2 to 4 players are all 11-1. And at No. 6, three different Wildcats have posted a collective mark of 10-1.

Conrad leads ACU with 11 wins, with Hermsdorf, Reed and Laura Mongin right behind her with 10.
