Wildcats blanked at West Texas A&M, 2-0, to fall to 1-6-1 in LSC play

CANYON – ACU's stunning fall from the top of the Lone Star Conference in 2011 to the bottom in 2012 continued Friday night as the Wildcats dropped a 2-0 decision to West Texas A&M at the WTAM Soccer Field in LSC women's soccer action.

The Wildcats finished 20-2-1 last season, won the LSC regular-season title and then advanced all the way to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight.  However, Friday's loss drops the Wildcats to 3-8-1 overall and 1-6-1 and into last place in the LSC.  ACU is in serious danger of missing the LSC Post-Season Tournament.  The Wildcats will return to action Sunday in Portales, N.M., against Eastern New Mexico.

West Texas A&M senior forward Leslie Briggs scored two goals, including the insurance goal in the 89th minute as the Lady Buffs improved to a league-leading 6-2 in the LSC and 7-4-1 overall.  Friday's win was the 100th career LSC victory for the Lady Buffs, who are now 100-43-10 all-time in the LSC.

WT got on the board in the12th minute as Briggs took a pass from McHorse and, with a defender in her face, Briggs turned around and fired from about 35-yards out to the upper left corner out of the reach of ACU goalkeeper Arielle Moncure for a 1-0 lead.  It was McHorse's fourth assist on the year.

In the 89th minute, following a corner kick by the Lady Buffs that sailed wide, ACU was unable to clear the ball out and WT regained possession as Blakely and Schultz found Briggs open in the box for her second goal – this time to the lower right corner for the insurance score.

The Wildcats had 10 total shots, including seven shots on goal, but never could put one past WTAM goalkeeper Yvette Bedoy.  Senior Julie Coppedge had three shots (two on goal), the only Wildcat with more than one shot on goal.
