Wildcats Blank Angelo State

Box Score

ABILENE Krysta Grimm posted her second multi-goal effort of the month Sunday leading ACU to a 2-0 victory over Angelo State at the Wildcat Soccer Pitch. The win kept ACU undefeated on the season at 5-0-1 (1-0-1 LSC).

Grimm last scored twice in a match Sept. 4 vs. A&M-International and this afternoon's output gave her the ACU lead in goals scored (5) and points (13). Both totals are career season highs.

Grimm scored her first goal off Whitley Lindholm's corner kick in the 18th minute, redirecting the ball with a soft touch from inside the six-yard box as the ball started to hook toward the goal. An Angelo State defender appeared to make a team save on Grimm's tip-in, but the referee had already judged the ball crossed the plane.

Grimm struck again in the 76th minute with assistance from Ashley Craig and Madison Brown. Craig crossed the ball to the near side from where Brown tracked it down, and then dribbled around a defender before touching it over to Grimm who scored from the middle of the six.

The goal provided the Wildcats with some extra breathing room against a Rambelle side that was just starting to warm up offensively midway through the second half.

After ACU scratched paint on its first two shots of the half with nothing to show for it, Angelo State fired four shots on goal during a six-minute window from the 57th to 63rd minutes. Wildcat goalkeeper Arielle Moncure came away with three saves during this flurry, and was bailed out by a defender with a team save after the second of two attempts by Hanna Horeis slipped out of her reach.

Moncure made one more stop in goal after ACU took its 2-0 lead, and the Wildcats successfully defended the third of three corner kicks at the start of the 83rd minute by blocking back a header shot taken by Brandie DeBacker.

Angelo State fired seven of its nine shots in the second half, placing six on frame. Moncure made five saves in sharing the shutout with starter Elliott London, who had two stops. ACU has blanked three opponents this season.

Grimm led the offense with seven shots, four of which she placed on goal, while three teammates tied for second with four shots. A third of the Wildcats' 21 shots were on target, keeping their season percentage above 50 percent at .528.

Head coach Casey Wilson said he was pleased with his team's consistency on both sides of the ball.

“We played more of our game today and cut down on the number of unforced errors as a result,” he said. “By reducing turnovers we minimized our running and retreating, and a lot of our success depends on how long we're able to possess the ball … Angelo State was tough and were in the game the whole way, but they turned it over a lot and we kept the ball.”

ACU returns to the road this weekend with matches Friday and Sunday at Eastern New Mexico and West Texas A&M. Kick-off times are set for 3 p.m. and 1:30 p.m.
