Javelinas knock off Wildcats

KINGSVILLE – The ACU Wildcats committed 25 turnovers and hit just 34.6 percent of their shots from the field as they lost again in Lone Star Conference South Division play, this time a 71-65 loss to Texas A&M-Kingsville at the Steinke P.E. Center.

The loss drops the Wildcats to 9-13 overall and 1-9 in the LSC South, while the Javelinas improve to 8-14 and 3-7.  The Wildcats will return to action Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. when it hosts Incarnate Word in a "home" game at McMurry's Kimbrell Arena.

Kingsville's bench players outscored ACU's reserves 32-14 in the game as the Wildcat subs combined to shoot just 4 for 17 from the floor.  ACU's starters, though, weren't much better from the floor as they combined to shoot just 14 of 35 from the floor and commit 17 turnovers.

ACU, though, led for much of the first half before a 3-pointer by Brock Kimball cut ACU's lead to 29-28 with 2:36 left in the half, and then a layup by Ricky Simon 54 seconds later gave the Javelinas a 30-29 advantage.  Kingsville eventually settled for a 34-31 halftime lead.

The Wildcats never led in the second half and Kingsville eventually pushed its lead to as much as 12 points (57-45) with 7:56 to play.  The Wildcats cut the Kingsville lead to four points twice in the final 72 seconds, but couldn't get closer.

Preston Davis led all scorers with 17 points, while Zach Williams had 12 pointsa and Marcus Washington 10 for the Wildcats.
