SAN ANTONIO – No. 2 Abilene Christian soccer avenged the lone stain on its otherwise spotless record by defeating Incarnate Word 2-0 Friday evening at Benson Stadium.
Goals were scored by
Whitley Lindholm and
Krysta Grimm in the 61st and 80thminutes, and
Elliott London made five saves in securing ACU's eighth-straight win since tying the Cardinals (4-5-4, 2-5-3 LSC) at 1-1 on Sept. 16. The Wildcats (12-0-1, 8-0-1 LSC) also stretched their unbeaten streak to an 18th match, with their last loss taking place on Oct. 29 of 2010.
Both of ACU's streaks are program records. The Wildcats won seven consecutive matches from Oct. 1 to 24 of last season en route to a 17-3-1 campaign.
Lindholm's goal was her third of the season, giving ACU three individuals with 10 points or more along with Grimm (17) and
Andrea Carpenter (25).
Lyndsey Womack assisted on Lindholm's score, which was her third in as many games as well as the team lead with five.
Grimm was assisted on her seventh goal of the year by
Ashley Holton, who has nine points on three goals and three assists.
Despite being outshot 9-8, the ACU defense managed to claim its eighth shutout – six of which have come vs. conference opponents. London has blanked five of seven opponents she's faced when playing all 90 minutes, and tonight's effort lowered her goals-against average to 0.30.
Incarnate Word was held to one corner kick and limited to four shots throughout the second half. Amber Guenther led the Cardinal offense with five shots, three of which were on goal. Goalkeeper Angelica Carrizales made two saves.
The win was ACU's second over Incarnate Word since 2007, knotting the all-time series at 2-2-1.
The Wildcats return to action Sunday at 1 p.m. at San Angelo. ACU beat the Rambelles 2-0 in their first meeting this season on Sept. 18.
