Wildcats drop series finale

KINGSVILLE -- ACU's woes in one-run games bit the Wildcats again Saturday afternoon as Texas A&M-Kingsville took a 3-2 win over the Wildcats in the finale of a Lone Star Conference softball series at Hubert Field.

The loss drops the Wildcats to 15-22 overall and 1-5 in the LSC, while the Lady Javelinas improve to 18-16 and 6-3.  The Lady Javelinas won the three-game set two games to one, dealing the Wildcats their 10th loss in 14 one-run games this season in Saturday's fianle.

ACU is back in action Tuesday when it hosts St. Mary's in a 4 p.m. doubleheader at Wells Field.

The Lady Javelinas led 1-0 before ACU got two runs in the fifth inning on a leadoff home run by Nancy Sawyers and an RBI double by Missy Mendoza.

The Lady Javelinas put two runners on base in the bottom of the fifth, but ACU pitcher Shelby Hall got out of the frame without any damage.

She wouldn't be so lucky in the sixth, however, as she gave up back-to-back singles to Lindsey Brown and Melissa St. Clair to lead off the frame.  After a sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third, Hall walked Amanda Arriaga to load the bases.

Pinch-runner Cassandra Hernandez scored the tying runwhen Jessica Schneider reached on a fielder's choice.  Dalia Marroquin then drove in the go-ahead run with a double down the rightfield line.  Hall struck out Cassie Anderson to end the inning, but the damage was done.

In the top of the seventh, Shawna Barrow reached on a one-out single, but was erased when Stephanie Tingle grounded into a fielder's choice.  Mendoza then flew out to centerfield to end the game, sending the Wildcats home with another one-run loss.
