KINGSVILLE – The ACU men and women travel south to Kingsville on Saturday to take on the Javelinas for the second time in four days. Both teams will be trying to put together winning streaks as the women are looking for their third straight win while the men ended a five game skid over the Javelinas on Tuesday night.
Tipoff for the women's game is scheduled for 2 p.m. as ACU is looking for their third straight win in the South Division. The Wildcats beat A&M-Kingsville 59-55 on Tuesday holding the conferences' top scoring team to their second lowest point total of the season. ACU also moved up a spot in the NCAA DII South Central poll to No. 8 after going 1-1 last week with a loss to Tarleton who is No. 6 and a win over Midwestern State.
Saturday's game will be the second against a regionally ranked opponent as the Javelinas moved to No. 10 after last week's win against Tarleton State. The rematch will pitch the LSC's top scoring offense and third leading scorer, Felicia Soza, against the conference's top scorer, the Wildcats' Jamie Meyer. Kat Kundmueller is also among the nation's leaders in assist per game averaging 7.2 apg which it good for second in NCAA DII.
In the late game the men will try for their second win in a row after holding on late against A&M-Kingsville Tuesday night for a 79-72 win. ACU hit 8 of 10 free throws in the last minute to seal the win after the Javelinas made a run in the last few minutes.
Dustin Heiman was near perfect going 2 for 2 from the field and hitting 11 of 13 from the free throw line for 16 points. Junior Giordan Cole was also solid as he added 16 points as well and continued his good defensive play with five steals.
Cole leads the team in blocks with 1.2 per game and has recorded a team high five steals twice this season. He is also the Wildcats leader in rebounds averaging 5.7 per game and a solid 2.3 offensive boards per game.
