ABILENE -- Reggie Nelson buried a 3-pointer with 57 seconds to play to break a 69-69 tie with ACU and then he hit two free throws with 19 seconds left as Eastern New Mexico held off ACU, 74-71, in a Lone Star Conference South Division men's basketball game at Moody Coliseum.
The loss drops ACU to 8-18 overall and 1-10 in the LSC South, while the Greyhounds improved to 9-16 and 4-7. The Wildcats will close out their season Saturday at 6 p.m. when they take on West Texas A&M in Canyon.
The Wildcats -- who never led in the contest -- trailed 69-64 with 1:57 to play when Victor Reid hit a layup after a feed from Tyler Jefferson. But
Marcus Washington hit a 3-pointer on an assist from
Preston Davis with 1:47 to play to give the Wildcats hope.
ACU forced an ENMU turnover and
Dustin Heiman was able to tie the game when he hit a driving layup with 1:22 to play, knotting the game at 69-69. But Nelson's 3-pointer inside one minute to play put the Greyhounds ahead to stay.
Heiman and Washington led the Wildcats with 13 points apiece, while
Eddie Thompson,
Abby Kabba and
Dosh Simms each had nine points.
