ABILENE -- The 17th-ranked ACU Wildcats split a doubleheader Saturday at the CBS Insurance Classic, knocking off Cameron before falling to Emporia State.
The Wildcats beat Cameron, 3-2, before losing to the Lady Hornets for the second time in as many days, 8-1. The Wildcats are now 4-6 on the season and will conclude their play in the tournament Sunday with a 2 p.m. game against Henderson State.
In the opening game of the doubleheader, the Wildcats trailed 2-1 going to the sixth before
Stephanie Tingle led off the inning with a single. After
Candice Miller popped out,
Nancy Sawyers followed with a two-run home run to left-centerfield that put the Wildcats on top, 3-2.
ACU freshman pitcher
Shelby Hall allowed two runners to reach base in the top of the seventh, but she got Jessica Orr to ground out to shortstop to end the game. Hall scattered five hits over seven complete innings, allowing just two runs on her way to picking up the win.
Emporia State wasted little time jumping on ACU starting pitcher
Brittany Rexroat in the second game, scoring three runs in the first and tacking on three more in the second. ACU didn't help its cause with four more errors to give it 10 in 10 games this season.
Emporia State's Amanda Self drove in two runs for the Lady Hornets, while Amanda Smith and Abby Hughes each drove in a run. ACU's only run came in the fourth on a solo home run by Sawyers.
