Zach Williams had a game high 29 points Monday night, but the Wildcats could not overcome a 19-point second half deficit falling 86-90 to Dallas Baptist at the Burg Center.
The Wildcats trailed by only four at the half after only shooting 40% from the field. The Patriots jumped out to a 19 point lead early in the second half, their largest of the night, when Russ Johnson knocked down a jumper giving DBU a 65-46 lead.
ACU went on a 14-2 run to cut the lead to nine after
Desmond Woodberry buried a trey pulling the Wildcats to 67-58. After a Patriot turnover
Ben Warton would knock down a pair of free throws pulling ACU within seven with just under seven minutes left to play.
Foul trouble would plague the Wildcats down the stretch however as Warton and
Alex Richman both fouled out. Warton would help cut the lead back to five before fouling out with a jumper from the wing at the 3:30 mark.
Williams would post 16 of his 29 in the second half and seven in the last minute 17 seconds of the ballgame as the Wildcats would scramble to pull back within five.
Dosh Simms nailed a three with 34 seconds left cutting the Patriot lead 86-81. The Wildcats shot 50% from behind the arc after going only 2-of-8 in the first half from downtown.
After trading baskets the Wildcats would foul with nine seconds left, but the Patriots would only hit one from the line making the Wildcat deficit seven. Williams would hit a pull up trey with five seconds left making it an 86-90 DBU lead.
However a two possession lead proved insurmountable as the Wildcats fell to 1-1 on the season. The Patriots improved to 1-1 as well. ACU will have a week off before returning home next Monday night as they host Dallas Christian with tipoff scheduled at Moody Coliseum for 6 p.m.
