KINGSVILLE – Former ACU football standouts Tony Harp and Major Culbert will play the final collegiate football game of their careers Friday night when they play in the Valero Cactus Bowl at Javelina Stadium.
The Cactus Bowl – the only NCAA Division II post-season all-star game – will kick off at 6:35 p.m. from the home field of the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas.
Harp -- a two-time first team all-Lone Star Conference South Division selection and the 2006 LSC South Division Freshman of the Year – was second on the Wildcats in tackles in 2009 with 74, including 44 solo stops. Harp also finished with two interceptions, five pass breakups and seven passes defended.
Harp – who earned all-region honors in 2009 – was a late addition to the all-star game and will play for the East squad.
Culbert transferred to ACU from Nebraska to play his senior season, and he started at safety alongside Harp in the Wildcats' secondary. Culbert was fifth on the team in tackles with 51, including 20 solo tackles. Culbert – an honorable mention all-LSC South Division selection – will play for the West squad.
Harp and Culbert are the 11th and 12th Wildcats to play in the Cactus Bowl since 2002, joining punter Brad Raphelt (2002), quarterback Colby Freeman (2004), offensive tackle Britt Lively (2004), defensive back Dawon Gentry (2005), defensive end Clayton Farrell (2006), wide receiver Jerale Badon (2007), tight end Chris Johnson (2007), offensive lineman Nathan Young (2007), wide receiver Jonathan Ferguson (2009) and offensive lineman Joseph Thompson (2009) on the list.
