Cameron holds off Wildcats, 71-64
Lady Aggies built big lead, then old off ACU
ABILENE -- The ACU Wildcats' first home game of the 2003-04 season won't be one they'll want to remember for very long.
ACU committed 22 turnovers and shot just 43 percent from the field Saturday afternoon as Cameron defeated ACU, 71-64, in a Lone Star Conference crossover game at Moody Coliseum.
The Lady Aggies (6-4) snapped a two-game winning streak for the Wildcats, who fall to 4-5 on the young season. ACU, which played its first eight games of the season away from Moody Coliseum, will return to action Monday at 6 p.m. when it hosts Southwestern Oklahoma State in another crossover contest at Moody Coliseum. The game can be heard on KSLI 1280 AM.
The Wildcats and Lady Aggies were tied 7-7 early in the contest before Cameron ripped off a 20-5 run to take a 27-12 lead with 11:45 left in the first half. Cameron upped its advantage to 17 at halftime (44-27), thanks in part to the effort of sophomore Brittany Cooksey, who had 17 of her 29 points in the first half.
Cameron held off almost every ACU charge in the second half until the Wildcats finally got the deficit below eight points with 2:08 to play when Melanie Carter hit a short jumper to make it a 67-61 game. The Wildcats got the lead down to five points (69-64) with 1:18 to play on a Leah Wilson free throw, but ACU was 0 for 3 from the field in the final 49 seconds, and Cooksey sealed the win with a pair of free throws with three seconds to play.
Senior center Lynsie Blau led the Wildcats with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Carter had 15 points and five rebounds. Cooksey led all scorers with 29 points to go along with 11 rebounds, two assists, one block and three steals in 37 minutes.
