Wildcats drop twinbill
ACU closes non-conference play with doubleheader loss
ABILENE -- ACU closed out its non-conference schedule Saturday by losing both ends of a doubleheader to Incarnate Word at Wells Field.
Both losses came in heartbreaking fashion for the Wildcats, who lost 2-1 in the opener and 5-4 in the nightcap. The losses drop ACU to 24-27 on the season. ACU will close out the 2003 regular season this weekend when it hosts Angelo State in a four-game Lone Star Conference South Division series at Wells Field.
ACU is in fourth place in the LSC South and must sweep the 40-6 Rambelles and must hope Texas Woman's is swept at home by Tarleton State in order to reach the LSC Post-Season Tournament. One ACU loss or one TWU win will end ACU's post-season hopes.
Here's a game-by-game glimpse at the two games:
Game 1: Incarnate Word 2, ACU 1
The Crusaders took advantage of three ACU errors to score an unearned run in the second inning on their way to a 2-1 win.
Michelle De La Cruz scored the game's first run on a single by Jennifer Bocanegra. Toni Timaeus later scored on an error by first baseman Heather Hicks.
ACU scored in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly by J.D. Williams, but went down in order in the bottom of the seventh after a leadoff single by Danielle Faulk.
Game 2: Incarnate Word 5, ACU 4
Incarnate Word rallied from a 3-2 deficit with a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth to take a 5-4 win in the second game of the non-conference doubleheader.
UIW led 2-0 before ACU posted three runs in the bottom of the third on a two-run triple by Williams and a run-scoring error by UIW catcher Stephanie Flores. But the Crusaders scored once in the fourth on an Elise Denoux double, and then put the game away with two runs in the fifth. De La Cruz and Flores each had RBI singles in the fifth.
ACU scored in the sixth on a Lanessa Glover RBI single, but the Wildcats left runners on second and third base in the bottom of the seventh inning.
